Why patients visit
The Many Reasons Patients Visit Our ER
People often search: What are common reasons to go to the ER? Should I go to the ER or urgent care? What symptoms need immediate care?
Emergency symptoms can come from nearly any part of the body — the heart, lungs, brain, digestive system, or from an injury. Montrose Emergency Room evaluates and treats the full spectrum.
Because many symptoms can point to more than one cause, a hands-on evaluation is often the most reliable way to know what’s going on and what treatment is needed.
Common categories of ER symptoms include:
Chest pain and cardiac symptoms
Breathing difficulty
Abdominal and digestive pain
Cuts, wounds, and bleeding
Broken bones and joint injuries
Fever and infection
Headaches and neurological symptoms
Stroke warning signs
Dehydration
Urinary and kidney symptoms
Eye, ear, and sinus symptoms
Cold and flu symptoms
Allergic reactions
Pediatric-specific symptoms
Symptoms following an accident or injury

How urgent is it?
How Urgent Is Your Symptom?
Mild Symptoms
Symptoms that are mild, stable, and not worsening may sometimes be appropriate for urgent care or a primary care visit.
When in doubt, an ER evaluation can rule out a more serious cause.
Moderate Symptoms
Symptoms that are uncomfortable, persistent, or gradually worsening often warrant same-day evaluation.
Montrose Emergency Room can evaluate moderate symptoms without an appointment or long wait.
Severe or Sudden Symptoms
Symptoms that are severe, sudden, or rapidly worsening should be treated as a possible emergency.
It is particularly important not to wait or self-diagnose severe or sudden symptoms — come in or call 911.

Never ignore these
Symptoms That Should Never Be Ignored
Chest Pain
Chest pain or pressure should always be evaluated as a possible emergency. Warning signs include:
Crushing or squeezing pressure
Pain radiating to the arm or jaw
Shortness of breath
Sweating or nausea
Lightheadedness
A sense of impending doom
Pain that started suddenly
Chest pain cannot be safely evaluated based on symptoms alone. An EKG and examination may be necessary.
Stroke Signs (FAST)
Every minute matters with a possible stroke. Remember FAST:
Face drooping
Arm weakness
Speech difficulty
Time to call 911
Sudden vision changes
Sudden loss of balance
If you see any of these signs, call 911 immediately rather than waiting.
Severe Allergic Reaction
A severe allergic reaction can progress quickly and needs emergency treatment.
Watch for swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing, or widespread hives.
Call 911 immediately for any signs of a severe allergic reaction.
Common combinations
When Symptoms Occur Together
Fever With Other Symptoms
A fever combined with other symptoms, like a rash, stiff neck, or severe pain, deserves prompt evaluation.
Seek medical attention when fever occurs alongside symptoms that seem out of the ordinary.
Pain With Vomiting
Pain combined with persistent vomiting can indicate the underlying cause is more significant.
Seek evaluation for pain and vomiting that doesn’t improve or is accompanied by other symptoms.
Injury With Numbness
Numbness or weakness following an injury can indicate nerve or circulation involvement.
Signs to watch for include numbness, tingling, or loss of movement near an injury.
